On April 23, it was announced that the Mustang softball team is ranked third in the North Central Region and thirteenth nationally. Those announcements came a day after Southwest clinched the NSIC title with two wins over Upper Iowa University.

Amanda Johnson was dominant from the pitching mound in both games, throwing a combined 10.1 scoreless innings. In game one, she pitched a seven inning complete game, striking out 12 batters while only allowing three hits without walking a batter. Andrea Fennern, Kristi Braden and Erin Dickhausen all scored in the three-run fifth inning. Another run was added in the sixth on a RBI single by Fennern, capping off the scoring for the 4-0 Mustang win.

In game two, Sara Silke started the game on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings and only allowing one run. Johnson took over with two outs and runners on the corners in the fifth but forced the Peacock batter to pop out to Fennern to end the scoring threat. The game was tied at 1 until the eighth when the Mustangs scored a run on a double by Amanda Burkhardt with runners on first and second. The other base runner, Dickhausen, later scored on a Peacock error. Johnson ended the game for Southwest, forcing a groundout and two strikeouts to earn her second win of the day.

Thursday’s doubleheader in St. Paul against the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul was postponed due to bad weather but the two teams were able to play Monday. After allowing CSP to score the first run of the game in the first on a Mattson RBI single that scored Bjorlin, the Mustangs answered back with four unanswered runs in innings two through four.

Amanda Tucci began the scoring for the Mustangs with a one out solo home run to tie the game at one in the second inning. In the third, Burkhardt was the one to go deep for Southwest, also scoring Megan Laetsch who doubled earlier in the inning. In the fifth inning, Burkhardt added her second home run of the game, scoring two to bring the score to 6-2 in favor of SMSU.
